How do I use Air Miles I earned through credit cards (Chase, AMEX, etc) to book a flight?

I know that some credit cards give air miles instead of cash-back or reward points but I'm not clear how you actually use them to book a flight. I understand how frequent flyer programs work, but this seems different.

It varies according to the card.

Some cards simply earn miles that are deposited into your frequent flier account. Examples are the Chase United Airlines Visa Card and the Delta SkyMiles AMEX cards.
